The Art of Proper Delegation

One of the perks that come with being a manager is that you have the power to delegate some of your tasks to your subordinates. However, most managers do not know how to properly use this power. Some continue to hog all the work for themselves, while others just dump their duties on an employee without considering the person’s abilities. So, how exactly does one properly delegate tasks to others?

Well, before you can start telling your workers to do this or to do that for you, consider if a certain task is able to serve two purposes. The first one is that it should lighten your work load so that you would be able to concentrate on other more important concerns. The second is that it should help the employee who is given the work to learn new things and to grow in a professional capacity.

One important thing that you must remember when delegating is that, though you can pass on your authority to do certain tasks to other people, you cannot delegate your responsibility for the tasks. This simply means that you cannot appoint just anyone to do the work. You must make sure that you provide the chosen person with the adequate training and that you supervise his work after you have delegated the tasks to him.

When you learn how to properly delegate tasks to subordinates, you would not just be freeing yourself from certain responsibilities so you can work on other jobs; you would also be helping your employees to become better workers by encouraging their growth and improvement as professionals.
